Millionaire landlord, Israr Fazal, 54, has been jailed for renting decrepit and dangerous flats in Manchester to vulnerable families. Up to 12 families, mostly from Eastern Europe, were charged up to £100 per week to live in the squalid conditions. On the other end of the spectrum, Mr Fazal himself was living in a luxury 1.3m mansion in Cheshire. Issues within the flats included damaged electric and gas meters, bare electrical wires hanging from the ceiling, collapsed ceilings, no fire alarms, furniture and white goods littering landings, and fire escapes blocked. After the case, Manchester councillor Paul Andrews said “slum landlords should be a thing of the past and I hope this serves as a warning to other who think they can rent out revolting properties and get away with it.”
